How many collections does it take to revive an American icon? Apparently, four can be enough to call it quits.

What happens when a brand built on the radical power of less starts making less feel like considerably more? Veronica Leoni is exiting Calvin Klein after four runway collections, closing a brief chapter in the label’s attempt to resurrect its high-end Collection line.
The timing raises a question more uncomfortable than the usual creative-director musical chairs: was the problem the designer, or a business trying to manufacture cultural relevance through clothes that never quite justified their existence?

The Business of Looking Relevant

The numbers tell a less glamorous story than the front row. Calvin Klein Collection had approximately 40 stockists ahead of Leoni’s fourth show in September 2026, while overall Calvin Klein sales fell 7 percent in the latest quarterly figures cited at the time.
The distinction matters: these were brand-wide figures, not Collection’s individual sales. The runway had regained visibility; evidence of a meaningful commercial halo remained elusive.

Leoni arrived with impeccable credentials, bringing an intellectual, European approach to an American institution whose most enduring asset has always been the seductive simplicity of its visual language.
Her collections oscillated between archival reverence, cerebral tailoring and an increasingly elusive idea of Calvin Klein sensuality.
The critical response grew increasingly divided, with questions emerging over whether her approach was revitalizing the house or overcomplicating a visual identity that had always thrived on instinct, provocation and precision.

Four shows were hardly enough to rebuild an entire luxury proposition, particularly when the wider business had yet to demonstrate that the strategy could translate runway attention into sustained demand.

The irony is that Calvin Klein already owns the cultural shorthand most luxury houses spend millions trying to invent: underwear, denim, erotic minimalism and images that lodge themselves in the collective memory.
The challenge was never simply to make the clothes more sophisticated. It was to make Collection feel indispensable.

Thank God, Less Is Less Again

Personally, I find the exit difficult to mourn.
Leoni’s Calvin Klein often felt like minimalism subjected to an unnecessary intellectual performance, as if the simplest silhouette required a supporting thesis to justify its presence.
The clothes could be polished, considered and impeccably credentialed, yet still leave the nagging impression that the idea was doing more work than the garment.

The final collection, presented in New York in September, attempted to strip away the excess and return to the discipline of American minimalism.
It was a more convincing direction, arriving just before the announcement that Leoni would leave.
Whether the decision reflects commercial pressure, contractual circumstances or a strategic reset remains undisclosed.
Calvin Klein has reaffirmed its commitment to Collection, but no successor has been announced.

The real failure, if there was one, would be mistaking a change of designer for a change of strategy.
Calvin Klein does not need another exercise in tasteful restraint, nor another creative director tasked with excavating an archive that already speaks fluently for itself. It needs a reason for Collection to matter beyond the runway.

Leoni’s departure may close the chapter.
The bigger question remains unanswered: can Calvin Klein turn its own mythology into a living proposition, rather than an increasingly expensive tribute to itself?
