There is no nostalgia in Duran Lantink’s first Haute Couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier. Instead of reconstructing the house’s mythology, the Dutch designer dismantles it, reassembles it, and sends it back onto the runway as something altogether stranger.
Titled Tech Couture, the Fall/Winter 2026–27 collection treats couture less as a celebration of craftsmanship than as a laboratory where centuries-old savoir-faire collides with 3D-printed exoskeletons, impossible silhouettes and bodies that seem engineered rather than dressed. Here, Marie Antoinette is not a muse but a provocation. Court dress becomes an exercise in glorious dysfunction, reminding us that couture has never been about practicality—it has always been about fantasy pushed to its limits.
Rather than sculpting the body, Lantink sculpts the silhouette. Cone bras migrate across garments, collars project into space, panniers dissolve into streams of tulle, while exaggerated proportions challenge the viewer to look beyond the flatness of the runway image. These are clothes designed to exist in motion, refusing to be reduced to a single photograph or an Instagram carousel.
The collection also signals a noticeable evolution from Lantink’s ready-to-wear debut for the house. Where his first outing divided opinion with its confrontational provocations, this couture debut feels more focused, balancing experimentation with an increasingly sophisticated command of construction. The irreverence remains, but it is now supported by an understanding of what Jean Paul Gaultier has always represented: freedom, theatricality and an obsession with reshaping identity through clothes.
More than an homage, this is a recalibration. Lantink doesn’t attempt to imitate Jean Paul Gaultier’s voice—he establishes his own, proving that the future of couture may not lie in preserving tradition, but in challenging every assumption it has ever embodied.
