The Odyssey: The Trojan Horse Arrived in London, Followed by Half of Hollywood

by Ada Maria Francesca Romeo

London became the center of the cinematic world on July 6, as the Odeon Leicester Square hosted the highly anticipated red-carpet gala for Christopher Nolan‘s latest epic, The Odyssey. Ahead of its July 17 theatrical release, the film has already established itself as one of the year’s biggest cinematic events, thanks to its extraordinary cast, ambitious scale, and the anticipation surrounding Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem.

Joining Nolan on the red carpet was an ensemble that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood. Matt Damon, who takes on the role of Odysseus, appeared alongside Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and many more. The impressive line-up reflects both the scale of the production and Nolan’s vision of transforming one of literature’s greatest epics into a contemporary cinematic spectacle.

Among the evening’s standout moments was the joint appearance of Anne Hathaway, who plays Penelope and radiated elegance while expecting her third child, Zendaya as the goddess Athena, and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen. Walking side by side, the three actresses embodied the film’s mythological spirit, turning the red carpet into a celebration of ancient Greece.

Matt Damon also attracted plenty of attention after joking in recent interviews that he landed the role of Odysseus only because fellow A-list actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Hugh Jackman were unavailable. Behind the humor, however, lies one of the most demanding performances of his career. Damon has described The Odyssey as the most challenging project he has ever undertaken, citing not only the physical transformation required to portray the legendary Greek hero but also the demanding production and technically complex filming process.

One of the most debated aspects surrounding the film’s release has been Universal Pictures decision, supported by Nolan, to restrict advance screenings exclusively to film critics and entertainment journalists while excluding influencers and content creators. At a time when social media personalities often play a central role in movie promotion, the choice has sparked widespread discussion online. Rather than relying on early viral reactions, the studio appears determined to preserve a sense of exclusivity and allow the film to be evaluated first through traditional film criticism, further increasing public curiosity ahead of its release.

The premiere also featured an unexpected crossover between cinema and football. Echoing a gesture seen only days earlier during the London premiere of House of the Dragon, members of The Odyssey cast were presented with personalized football jerseys featuring their character names. The tribute, arriving while the FIFA World Cup captures global attention, added a contemporary twist to the evening and highlighted how sport, fashion and entertainment continue to intersect during major cultural events.

With an all-star cast, groundbreaking technical ambition and Christopher Nolan behind the camera, The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the defining cinematic releases of the year. Following its spectacular London premiere, expectations have only grown stronger as audiences prepare to embark on a new journey with one of mythology’s greatest heroes.
