The Louis Vuitton Foundation presents “Basquiat x Warhol: Painting Four-Handed,” an exhibition celebrating the unique collaboration between iconic artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. The exhibit, open to the public from April 5th to 28th, 2023, showcases over 80 collaborative and individual works by the two artists, as well as pieces by other influential creators from the 1980s New York art scene.

Curated by Dieter Buchhart, Anna Karina Hofbauer, and Olivier Michelon, “Basquiat x Warhol: Painting Four-Handed” includes more than 300 works and documents, featuring 80 canvases co-signed by Basquiat and Warhol. The exhibition displays their individual works alongside those of contemporaries like Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Kenny Scharf, and Michael Halsband, highlighting the energy of downtown New York’s art scene in the 1980s. Additionally, photographs like Michael Halsband’s “Boxing Gloves” series further enrich the exhibit.
The showcase begins with portraits of Basquiat by Warhol and vice versa, followed by their early collaborations, which were initiated by their art dealer, Bruno Bischofberger, and involved a partnership with Italian artist Francesco Clemente. After creating 15 paintings with Clemente, Basquiat and Warhol continued their collaboration with fervor, resulting in works like “Ten Punching Bags (Last Supper)” and the 10-meter-long “African Mask” canvas.
Basquiat looked up to Warhol as a mentor, while Warhol rediscovered his passion for painting through their partnership. The exhibition highlights their dynamic exchange of styles and ideas, as well as themes such as the integration of the African American community into North American narratives.
In summary, the Louis Vuitton Foundation’s “Basquiat x Warhol: Painting Four-Handed” exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the creative synergy between two legendary artists while celebrating the vibrant energy of the 1980s New York art scene.
