Q) You have a new single out called ‘Cool’. This song has a much lighter feeling to your last single ‘Sad Girls Dance Party’. Can you explain a bit about the inspiration for this song and what it means to you personally?
A) I’d say a common thread through all my songs is the use of opposing forces to tell a story. Classic Gemini here. Haha. “Cool”, on the surface, is a very repetitive pop song with softer vocals and production that just makes you feel good. The lyrics, however, tell a much darker story. It’s about all the crazy things I’ve done to pander to the fame life and keep up with my very successful friends. Looking back on some of those experiences, even when I was uncomfortable, I put a smile on my face and pretended to not let it bug me when deep down I was being eaten alive by anxiety. Hence, the use of wrapping the dark story in a nice, fun, easy listening package. It reflects exactly what was going on with me at the time.

Q) When can we expect the music video to drop for ‘Cool’ and can you give any details on the art direction of the video to your fans?
A) As you can probably tell from the “Sad Girls Dance Party” music video, I like my visuals and story to be extremely cinematic. Movies and music videos were such an integral part of my development as an artist and I can’t imagine doing something in my own art that doesn’t reflect that. The global pandemic has caused things to be a little tricky when it comes to producing anything that requires a lot of hands on deck, so the creation of the “cool” music video has been an interesting one to try and pull together while still maintaining my standards for the art I want to put out into the world. All that being said, I’ve finally got, what I believe to be, a very interesting and doable video concept to shoot and I’m very excited about it. What I can say about it is I will be sticking to similar themes of horror and creature work for the video and I’m HOPING to have it out by the end of October. FINGERS CROSSED!

Q) You direct your own work while also being in your music videos. Do you find that it is easy to balance the two jobs at the same time or is it a bit stressful?
A) My vision for my work is very specific to me personally so I think it would be hard for anyone to truly direct something I’ve concocted in my brain. That being said, I have a wonderful team that helps guide the ship with me. My work, especially visually, is a collaborative effort between the production company, Two Seas Media and me. Without them and more specifically, Hao Jer Chang, who is my creative partner, I wouldn’t have the ability to do the things I’m able to pull off artistically.

Q) If you could explain in a sentence or two what you hope each listener gains after hearing your music, what would you say?
A) I think as I’ve grown as a person that answer has changed and will continue to. Right now I’d say I want to give my audience an escape. Especially during these crazy times, everyone needs that immersion into a different reality even if it’s just for 2 to 3 minutes. That’s exactly what all my favorite artists provided me with and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be here today without that.

Q) Which one of your songs would you say had to be your favorite so far and why would you choose this specific song?
A) While I love all my children, I’d have to say the most fun one to work on was “The Neighbors” off my EP Spiders Make Great Poets. From the quirky chord progressions and tempo changes, to the theatrical type vocals and lyrics, it’s what I’m most proud of. I think it encompasses me as an artist perfectly. There will definitely be more like that one to come.

Q) Living inside the creative realm of your mind for too long can be quite exhausting. We find artists often forget to give themselves much-needed breaks away from their passions. What do you like to do most outside of your music to refresh your energy and mind?
A) Oooo I’m a nature buff so going on a hike is always a good recharger. I’m also a huge movie nerd so getting lost in a film is a go-to escape for me. And when all else fails I like to dive into cat videos online haha.

Q) The Pandemic has brought scary emotions out of people. If you could wish for one thing people could start seeing in their day, what would it be?
A) Oh, I wish people could see how beautiful they are. I wish everyone could look in the mirror and be proud of who’s looking back. At least in my life, self-love has been key in me learning to truly love others and to see the world around me in a positive light. I would love to give that gift to as many people as I can.
Q) Do find that you get nervous before a live performance, filming or meet and greet and how do you calm your nerves?
I think there are always some pre-performance jitters but that’s to be expected. I have been performing for so long that the nerves fuel me to doing my best work. It’s when I’m not nervous that I have to watch out because that’s when I start making mistakes. In terms of calming my nerves if they ever get to a debilitating place, I lay on the floor. The floor is where I am most calm weirdly enough. Even in performance, if I’m not feeling it, I find some way to get to the floor. It resets and recharges me. Some of my bets work has come from my relationship to the floor haha.
